Kamimura Distillery was founded in 1882 by Morimasa Kamimura in Hantagawa, Naha. Before the days of printed labels, its Awamori was affectionately known simply as “Kamimura’s spirit”. It was later sold under the Kamimura, Shurei and Three Star labels, bottled and stored in earthenware jars. In the years following the war, it became a much-loved spirit that brought comfort to many.
In 1958, Kamimura Distillery began exploring the possibilities of ageing Awamori in oak barrels. Ten years later, in 1968, it launched DANRYU, an oak-aged kusu that introduced a new style of maturation to the world of Awamori.
In 1999, in search of a better environment for its craft, the distillery relocated to the foot of the lush Ishikawa Plateau in central Okinawa.
Today, Kamimura Distillery continues to nurture the skills and spirit passed down through generations, while pursuing its goal of creating exceptional Awamori that brings both inspiration and a sense of comfort to those who enjoy it.
We hope that more and more people will come to discover and enjoy Kamimura Distillery’s Awamori, as we continue to devote ourselves to refining our craft for generations to come.
